After a home remodel, it is common to add a vent to a new room. Likewise, if you have aroom that needs an additional register; you will need to connect to the existing ductwork. Before you begin the process of adding a new vent, make sure your existing unit has the tonnage to cover a new room and that the addition won’t affect efficiency. If you are good to go, follow these steps to complete the addition.
First, measure and cut into the ceiling (or floor) for the new register. Next, locate the supply duct and prepare to install a new 6-inch starter collar. Trace a circle into the supply duct and cut out the new hole.Bend the tabs on the collar back so that it holds it in place. Once you have finished those steps, you can install a 6-inch circular pipe. If you are dealing with tight spaces, you can use an insulated flex pipe instead. If you are using floor registers, you may also need a register boot.
